"Rice plus Project distributed over 22 tons of rice last year alone. an impressive amount of beans. plus other necessities."
Our vision is to wipe out poverty in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. This vision includes empowering women to start small business circles. By developing new skills they can create a higher standard of living for themselves and their families.
Meet Our Founder
Over twenty-five years ago,
Carmel, California's resident Sandhya Kolar realized an overwhelming aspiration to begin helping the Salinas Valley field workers that struggled to provide food for their families. Sandyha purchased a fifty-pound sack of rice and, with help from her daughter, set about filling smaller bags that were donated to feed those who hungered.
What started as one woman's vision has become an endeavor that includes up to 50 volunteers joining together in the same living room where it all started. The Rice plus Project has grown since then, and every first Sunday of the month devoted volunteers now gather at the Vista Lobos Room in Camel to serve by bagging rice, and organizing other food staples for distribution.
The efforts of this nonprofit organization provide the less fortunate with essentials such as:
- Other food staples
- Warm clothing in winter
- Warm blankets
- Other essentials to life
